Project Background

A preliminary assessment on the feasibility of developing the Chongde-Fengyuan corridor was conducted in accordance with the "Overall Taichung MRT Network Evaluation Plan" filed with the MOTC. Demand for public transport was found to have met the threshold for the construction of a mass rapid transit system. The route also passes through emerging development areas indicating that the Chongde-Fengyuan Line offers sufficient demand and development potential. Detailed planning of the MRT Red Line as well as a feasibility study of the MRT Chongde-Fengyuan Line will hopefully serve to generate transportation synergies for the overall MRT network.

Project Description

According to the "Overall Taichung MRT Network Evaluation Plan" filed with the MOTC, the planned Chongde-Fengyuan Line will be of the viaduct type and start at the intersection of Chongde Rd. and Sanmin Rd. The line will run past Chongde Rd., Chengde Rd., Section 1 of Fengyuan Blvd., and Zhonzheng Rd. before terminating at the intersection of Fengyuan Blvd. and Zhongzheng Rd. The overall route will pass through five administrative districts including the North District, Beitun District, Tanzi District, Shengang District, and Fengyuan District to link together shopping districts and corridors such as the Yi-Zhong Shopping District, Chongde Shopping District, Hanshin Intercontinental Mall, and Tanya Shen Green Bikeway. The route will measure approximately 11.8km in length and is to have 8 elevated stations.

Current Progress

The estimated budget for the "Taichung Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit System Chongde-Fengyuan Feasibility Study (臺中都會區大眾捷運系統崇德豐原線可行性研究)" is NT$20 million, to be funded by a NT$11.7 million grant approved by the MOTC on November 20, 2024, and a matching grant of NT$8.3 million from the City Government. Once the budgeting process is completed by Taichung City Government, the tendering process will be initiated to support the progressive realization of Taichung's vision for the overall MRT network.
